St. Christopher lived during the reign of Decius, when the bishop of Antioch was the holy martyr Babila. It is referred to and often depicted as the dog head or Cynoscephalae, due to its origin from a region of Asia where people are often described as dog head, due to their lack of education. Saint Christopher, born as Reprovos, was captured as a prisoner during a war and was transferred to Antioch, where he was baptized a Christian by the martyr Babylas. It is said that he passed pilgrims from one bank of a river to the other, Christ being one of them. The cause of his beheading was the conversion to the Christian religion of the Roman soldiers sent to arrest him and of two women sent to seduce him.
