St. John the Baptist, one of the "great" saints of our Church, lived an ascetic life in the Judean desert until he was thirty. He lived on locusts and honey, was tanned, serious, dignified and dynamic with an impartial and remarkable personality. He prepared the coming of Jesus through his teachings which can be summed up in the phrase "Repent? The kingdom of heaven is near". Its celebration became official in the 5th century. According to the word of the Lord "no man was greater than John the Baptist".
