Born in Egypt to rich parents, Saint Anthony gave up his wealth and his earthly life and left for the desert. He became the example of an ascetic life and a symbol of inspiration for all ascetics. He handed his soul over to God at the age of 105. The original icon, hagiographed by Michael Damaskinos, is found in the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens.
