St. Nicholas was the only son of a rich and religious family from Lycia. After his parents died, he handed over his fortune to the poor. He became famous for his charitable work, despite his efforts to hide it. In his ascetic life, God's voice commanded him to live among people, because that was the only way to glorify his name. He was elected Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, where he served his flock as a true shepherd. During the empire of Diocletian and Maximilian, he taught people the power of the Lord. He saved three people from death, twice. Kind, honest, fair, he was a real angel to people. He died in 343 AD, on December 6. The original 15th century icon is kept in the Holy Monastery of Gonia, in Kissamos of Crete.
