The apostle Marcos, born as John, owed his Christian faith and principles to his Christian mother Mary, a Christian from Jerusalem. He was the grandson of Barnabas (one of the first Christians who together with the twelve Apostles helped spread the Christian religion) and St. Paul also called him his son. He accompanied St. Paul and St. Barnabas on various missionary journeys. He was in Rome with Saint Paul during his first imprisonment, and he was with Saint Peter in Rome when he wrote his first letter. His missionary work spread to Egypt, where he founded the Church of Alexandria and was its prelate from 43 AD until his martyred death in 68 AD His relics are kept in the Basilica of San Marco.
