St. John Chrysostom, Vassilius the Great and St. Gregory of Nazianzo, or St. Gregory the Theologian, are considered the great hierarchs and ecumenical masters of the Orthodox Church, patrons of students and of education. The Three Hierarchs were celebrated from the middle of the 11th century, during the reign of Constantine IX Monomachos or Alexios I Comnenus. Their memory is celebrated on January 30 and symbolizes the Holy Trinity as it was first celebrated as an educational holiday in 1842. Its official institutionalization of the celebration came much later, in 1911.
