His name means "God is my power" and he is one of the few angels mentioned in the Bible. He is the angel who announced the good news of the birth of Jesus Christ and alleviated Joseph's fears. In later years, he is said to have appeared to a monk at the Sacred Temple of Protatus at Karyes on Mount Athos and carved the phrase "Axion Esti" on a block of marble in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary which took its name from l hymn of the same name.
