Santa Sofia, together with her three daughters, Sant'Elpida, Santa Pisti and Sant'Agapi are a symbol of faith and courage for the Church. They lived during the reign of Hadrian (117 - 138 AD), originally from a rich noble family of Italy. Adriano initially tried to make them renounce their faith in Christ by using mild means, but then resorted to incredible violence. He killed one daughter after another with horrific torture; 12 year old Pisti, 10 year old Elpida and 9 year old Agapi. He let their mother endure her martyrdom alive to bury them. After burying her daughters, she handed her spirit over to the Lord.
