Santa Barbara was born and lived in Nicomedia of Asia Minor, during the reign of Maximilian in the 3rd century AD and was known for her beauty and grace. Her father was a zealous gentile nationalist named Dioscoro or Diosoro, who in order to protect her from suitors, deprived her of her freedom. However, he failed to deprive her of her true love for Jesus. Her father, later enraged by his daughter's conversion to Christianity, handed her over to the Roman governor during the period of Christian persecutions. According to Symeon her biographer, her father himself beheaded her, but he himself was struck by lightning soon after completing his crime. His memory is celebrated on December 4th.
