As narrated by the Evangelists, in the Metamorphosis, Christ was revealed before three of his disciples who received God's command to obey His Son. According to the evangelists, Christ went to pray on Mount Thavor taking with him three of his disciples, Peter, John and Jacob who were tired after the difficult climb and fell asleep upon their arrival at the top. When they woke up they saw Christ, framed by a brilliant light, his white clothes glistening in the sunlight. He was speaking to two men, Moses and Elijah, his two most important prophets. Mysterious from the spectacle, the disciples heard the voice of God telling them to obey his beloved Son, the one delivered to save the world.
The icon of the Metamorphosis of Christ decorates the nave of the Holy Monastery of Stavronikita and is the work of Theophanes the Cretan, 1546 AD
