It is the representation of the moment in which the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary the joyful news of the birth of the Son of God, through her. The Virgin Mary, with her head bowed, a sign of humility and acceptance of the faith, agrees to the news with expectation and joy. The Holy Child is depicted in her womb. The original icon is kept in the Sanctuary of the Church of the Annunciation, in Nazareth, the place where the Virgin Mary met the Word of God. The church is located above a well from which holy water still flows today.
