The icon of Extreme Humility depicts the crucifixion, lamentation and burial together in a single scene. In this icon - where in synthesis a posteriori, on the right and left sides of Christ both the Mother of God in mourning and John or only the Mother of God are depicted - the substantial humility of Christ is indicated, not just an external or altruistic behavior but an internal realization of life as an expression of love and communion. The resurrection of the Lord also took place by way of humility. The icon is a symbol of the Passion, which leads to humility, to death for the good of the people.
Jesus' last cry symbolizes the completion of his earthly assignment culminating in his victory on Earth and his long journey towards His union with the Father. The original icon of "extreme humility" is dated to the sixteenth century; it is attributed to the Cretan school with tempera on wood and egg and is kept in the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos.
