It is one of the most familiar depictions of the Virgin Mary. The Cretan painters of the 15th and 16th centuries reproduced the icon in its most popular version, that of Emmanuel Lombardos - a great post-Byzantine icon painter - who lived in the second half of the 16th century. The original is exhibited at the Benaki Museum.
